The hallmarks of ovarian cancer: proliferation and cell growth

2020

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is a heterogeneous group of diseases with distinct biological and clinical behaviour. Despite the differences between them, the capability of tumour cells to continuously proliferate and avoid death is maintained among histotypes. This ability is the result of alterations at different levels, causing the deregulation of cell cycle and proliferative-related pathways. Even if the leading role is played by RB and TP53, changes in other molecular pathways are involved in the development of EOC. This ability can be exploited to generate in vitro and in vivo models resembling the conditions of tumour development in a patient. In vivo models, such as patient-derived…

Inherited Neuromuscular Disorders: Which Role for Serum Biomarkers?

2021

Inherited neuromuscular disorders (INMD) are a heterogeneous group of rare diseases that involve muscles, motor neurons, peripheral nerves or the neuromuscular junction. Several different lab abnormalities have been linked to INMD: sometimes they are typical of the disorder, but they usually appear to be less specific. Sometimes serum biomarkers can point out abnormalities in presymtomatic or otherwise asymptomatic patients (e.g., carriers). More often a biomarker of INMD is evaluated by multiple clinicians other than expert in NMD before the diagnosis, because of the multisystemic involvement in INMD. The authors performed a literature search on biomarkers in inherited neuromuscular disord…

Thrombin-antithrombin III complexes in type II diabetes mellitus.

1992

Several studies suggest that diabetes is associated with a hypercoagulable state. Therefore determination of thrombin-antithrombin complex (TAT) could represent a sensitive parameter for specific detection of a latent activation of the clotting system. The present study documents increased plasma TAT in a heterogeneous group of non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients. The finding of increased TAT levels both in diabetic patients with vascular complications and in vascular disease patients without diabetes suggests a relationship between existing vascular disease and the hemostatic mechanism that produces augmented thrombin activity. In acute vascular occlusions the presence of diabetes seem…

Soft Tissue Sarcomas (STS)

2021

Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) represent a rare and heterogeneous group of solid tumors derived from mesenchymal progenitors and account for 1% of all adult malignancies. Although in the last decade anthracycline-based chemotherapy single agent or in combination has been able to improve clinical benefits, prognosis is still poor, and STSs represent an important unmet medical need.

ChemInform Abstract: Antimicrobial Activity Characterization in a Heterogeneous Group of Compounds.

2010

In this work we carry out a study of pattern recognition to detect the microbiological activity in a group of heterogeneous compounds. The structural descriptors utilized are the topological connectivity indexes. The methods followed are stepwise linear discriminant analysis (linear analysis) and artificial neural network (nonlinear analysis). Although both methods are appropriate to differentiate between active and inactive compounds, the artificial neural network is, in this case, more adequate, since it shows in a test set a prediction success of 98%, versus 92% obtained with linear discriminant analysis.

Description and evaluation of an introductory course to Matlab for a heterogeneous group of university students

2010

This paper presents the experience of the authors in teaching the Matlab™ software to students with different levels of academic training, even though all of them belong to the field of Science. Matlab™ is a worldwide standard in technical programming and computing, and its use is still growing; therefore, it is taught in many different university degree programs (Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, etc.). The course analyzed in this paper contains examples of different fields of knowledge to show the students the versatility and power of this tool. At the end of each course, which consists of 30 h, the students expressed their opinions about the content in a private opinion poll (questionna…

Polyphenols: Bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive components

2019

Abstract Plant phenolics consist of a heterogeneous group of chemical species naturally present in vegetables and commonly alleged to display health benefits. In modern times, the consumption of processed food is increasing within several populations along with the demand for food of enhanced characteristics, such as those including bioactive compounds (e.g., phenolic compounds). On one hand, thermal processing, widely used to increase food safety, has deep impacts on bioaccessibility and bioavailability of bioactive components. On the other hand, non-thermal technologies are interesting alternatives, but additional studies are necessary to understand the biochemistry fundamentals and hence…
